Hoary

Sharon asks…How can I tell the difference between a common redpoll and a hoary redpoll?There are a couple of birds who visit my backyard on a nearly daily basis. They're clearly redpolls, but I can't tell if they're common redpolls or hoary redpolls. How can I determine which they are? Are the two species even separate anymore?Anne answers:The Common Redpoll is pale and brown-streaked with a bright red cap and black chin. The male has pink breast and the female is darker and streakier with little or no red, except on her crown.
